Dr. Ron Reflects: The Book of Books (Bible)

I am both amazed and saddened by the widespread disregard for the Bible in our society today. It is evident that too many people do not understand it, or don’t have the desire to do so. They ridicule those of us who rely on it for our guidance in life. Reading, reflecting, and discerning what has been read in the Scriptures is a time consuming process; many people live for the moment and fail to see the need to explore anything in such depth.

Why study the Bible? There is no other book that compares to it – it is the Book of books. It is God’s special revelation to us, and it was written:

Over a 1500-1600 year span (1,500+ BC to 70+ AD).

By 40 different authors from every walk of life – kings, shepherds, poets, fishermen, scholars, farmers, tax collectors, military leaders, a physician. These writers were inspired by God; how else would you explain the fact that people with such limited education and training were able to communicate so clearly? (2 Pet. 1:20-21)

In many different places – Moses in the wilderness, Daniel on a hillside, Paul from prison, Luke while traveling, John while in exile.

On three continents – Africa, Asia, and Europe

In a wide variety of literary styles – poetry, historical narrative, songs, romance, memoirs, satire, personal correspondence, law, prophecy, allegory, biography, autobiography.

It is the best-selling book of all time with over 5 billion copies sold and distributed.

I’ve read a lot of books in my lifetime, but none of them have ever come close to the Bible in providing the guidance I’ve needed in my life. In 2 Timothy, Paul (one of our Greatest Men of All Time)  tells us his thoughts on the value of Scripture:

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Take some time and get to know this book. You won’t regret it.
