The Legend of Zelda (NES): Ten Things You Didn’t Know

7) It’s Dangerous to Go Alone!

Link originally started with the sword in-hand. When The Legend of Zelda was tested with a focus group the majority of players found it to be confusing and difficult. To “correct” this, an irritated Miyamoto ordered changes in the game to make it even more challenging. One of these changes included taking Link’s sword away and storing it in a cave with an old man. This change, along with the other changes to make the game more difficult, was designed by Miyamoto to create communication between players who were struggling. His hope was that it would create a community around the game where players helped one another to progress through the game. It’s crazy to think that the famous quote “IT’S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE! TAKE THIS,” almost didn’t happen!
