Top 10 Things Americans Worship (And Shouldn’t)

8) The Sexual

Sex sells … and America is buying. It is almost impossible to engage in the marketplace without being inundated with multiple sexual sales pitches; and why? Because sex is a powerful, primal part of the human experience and can be used to manipulate and move others toward purposes it was never intended for.

Like the other objects / concepts in this list, sex is a contingent thing; but a thing endowed with special power and purpose from its creator. Sex was given to creation to ensure survival; but for humanity in particular, to help cement and solidify the basic unit of our society — the family. It creates powerful chemical bonds within the brains of the two people engaged in order to strengthen their connection and produce a stable / optimal long-term environment for the propagation and raising of children.

Let’s get real … our culture has totally defiled the teleology of sex. We have used and abused it for every disgusting human whim conceivable, and that abuse has wreaked havoc on its intended purpose — preserving the family.  Single parent homes have surged meteorically in the last 40 years and are a catalyst for the measurable damage caused to children living in them. From Prospect.org:

Children who grow up with only one of their biological parents (nearly always the mother) are disadvantaged across a broad array of outcomes … they are twice as likely to drop out of high school, 2.5 times as likely to become teen mothers, and 1.4 times as likely to be idle — out of school and out of work — as children who grow up with both parents. Children in one-parent families also have lower grade point averages, lower college aspirations, and poorer attendance records. As adults, they have higher rates of divorce. These patterns persist even after adjusting for differences in race, parents’ education, number of siblings, and residential location.

All is not lost. God can redeem anything and he is maximally engaged in the business of doing so, but (unfortunately) that doesn’t change the initial inevitability of real consequences and real damage that the devotion to all things sexual is delivering to our culture.
