Wednesday morning, President Trump took to Twitter to announce the repeal of President Obama’s policy allowing transgender individuals to serve in the US military.

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military,” Trump wrote in a series of tweets. “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”

Gender dysphoria, also known as dual role transvestism or gender identity disorder, is a certifiable mental illness listed in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), as well as in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).
