1) The Lord of the Rings
J.R.R. Tolkien is the father of modern fantasy. Virtually every other piece of high fantasy-fiction is derivative of his work in the realm of Middle Earth. What many may not be aware of, however, is that Tolkien was a devout Christian; instrumentally involved in the leading of others, including his friend C.S. Lewis, to Christ. The books themselves feature a plethora of overtly Christian symbolism: such as the power and price of sin (the one ring) the triune function of Jesus of Nazareth as prophet (Gandalf), priest (Frodo), and King (Aragorn), and the virtually identical natures of Eru-Illuvatar (The One Father of All) and God the Father, creator of all things. In Tolkien’s own words:
“The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work…”
The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson, and featuring an all-star cast, reaches the absolute pinnacle of film-making in the seminal Return of the King; winning 11 Academy Awards and passing the billion dollar mark at the global box office.
