9) Isaac Newton
Sir Isaac Newton was an English scientist and philosopher responsible for revolutionary scientific discoveries running the gamut from the physics of celestial mechanics and gravitation to calculus, optics, geometry and more. Newton’s discoveries contributed significantly to the broad foundation upon which humanity’s advancement of science would build beyond the stratosphere — ensuring that Europe (and the West) would become the most technologically advanced civilization the world had ever seen.
The accomplishments of this scientific “giant” would offer immense aid to future scientific minds; providing them a sizeable set of shoulders from which to see even further. Our societies’ current advanced understanding of physics — and with it our significantly improved technology — owe much to the initial work of this eminent natural philosopher.
“I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.” – Sir Isaac Newton
